What Are Concrete Words?

Concrete words and phrases come in four basic flavors: objects, actions, behaviors and persons. Using concrete words and phrases adds color, clarity and precision to the act of writing. Without this, the candidate’s writing is imprecise and dull, usually failing to present a professional appearance and to keep the audience’s attention.

Objects

Objects name a particular type of item. Concrete objects are descriptive nouns indicating a type, style, or kind of object. Saying, for example, “the fireman entered the building” would be an abstract statement. Saying “the fireman entered the burning Ace Hardware building” would be an example of using concrete words to describe the building.

Actions (Verbs)

Objects, of course, do not exist in a vacuum. Some objects take action against, towards, or to other objects. Abstract verbs fail to communicate exactly what action occurred. Concrete verbs are more precise in their description of the action. Rewriting the phrase above to read, “The firefighter climbed through the broken window to enter the burning Ace Hardware building” would be more desirable.

Behaviors

Another aspect of concrete phrases is the description of specific behaviors linked to an action. In the above example, expanding the sentence to read, “The firefighter carefully climbed through the broken window, avoiding the razor sharp fragments, to enter the burning building” greatly improves the image created by the sentence.

Persons

Finally, identifying specific persons can set the concrete phrase into place. Adding this specific identification to the above sentence changes it to read, “The District 5 fire department captain climbed carefully through the broken window, avoiding the razor sharp fragments, to enter the burning Ace Hardware building.”
